Teaching Mathematics
As I have grown in my study of education, and particularly math education, I have come to realize that I will not spend my career teaching math - I will spend it teaching students how to reason, how to problem-solve, how to construct arguments, and how to think more critically. I am a firm believer that these are the true points of mathematics education, which is why I hold the Standards for Mathematical Practice so dear. While it is obviously important to teach particular math concepts that students might use later in life, it is even more important to teach them these types of skills that they can use in any life situation at any age.
In addition to the Standards for Mathematical Practice, I think that students of any age should have basic number sense and calculation abilities. I believe that students should be able to see an application of the work that they do in math class. I believe that students should discover mathematical concepts on their own through observation and experimentation. I believe that having these experiences in the math classroom will alleviate some of the math anxiety and aversion that students experience, leading more students to the beauty of mathematics.
