Mathematics Assessments
Authentic Performance Tasks
Students need to see the application of mathematics in the real world, so they should be able to complete realistic projects involving the math that they learn. This performance task, also included in the quadrilaterals unit, allows students to use quadrilaterals to create a tile or quilt pattern. They then use their knowledge of area and perimeter to determine the amount of each material they will need to complete their pattern. This performance task culminates in a presentation where they "sell" their pattern to a company. |

Vocabulary
Vocabulary is an important part of being able to communicate in the math classroom. Therefore, I believe that vocabulary instruction and assessment are important. Students should be able to demonstrate that they understand definitions on a higher-level, as illustrated by this "Rational Numbers" vocabulary quiz here.

Traditional Assessments
It is nearly impossible to move away from traditional computation assessments in mathematics - after all, students do need to know how to complete these calculations. Modifications that I like to do to traditional tests include giving students a choice as to which problems they want to solve, letting them work with a partner on more difficult problems, and allowing students to rework missed problems for half credit. Some of these techniques are illustrated by the test here.
