Contemplate then Calculate
This is a video of myself rehearsing an instructional activity called Contemplate then Calculate in a Secondary Math Methods course at WVU. In this activity, the "students" (my fellow classmates) are presented with a calculation problem, but instead of solving it immediately, they are asked to contemplate it first, to see what types of things they notice about the problem and the numbers in the problem that might make it easier to solve than the "standard" way. The purpose of this activity is to help students see structure within numbers and problems, and to help them understand that the "standard" way is not always the easiest way; sometimes there are shortcuts! In this instance, the problem the students were given was 4 2/3 x 3 1/4 (four and two-thirds multiplied by three and one-fourth). |
